Thread: How-to change your Dreambox password

Seem's like many users never change their password, and are using the standard combination, which is the same for every single Dreambox.

This way, we compromise our own AND sharing friends security, since ANYONE can acces and mess around with the Dreambox by knowing the DNS adress!

So please CHANGE YOUR PASSWORD FROM THE DREAMBOX!!!

It can be done in 2 ways:

1. Using the "puttytel" proggy, which can be obtained here: CLICK HERE

2. Doing it manually with a telnet session:

-Choose "Start" and "Run" in Windows, then enter "telnet your.dyndns.adress"
-Logon with your username and password (username is always "root", password is "dreambox" from standard)
-Enter "passwd" in the session
-Enter your new password twice

Password has to be min. 5 and max. 8 letters long, and can consist of UPPERCASE/lowercase letters and numbers!

here are some simply steps:


1 change your password (default : dreambox) connect via telnet to you box
press ->passwd and type the new password

2. close on you router 2 ports port 21 for ftp and port 23 for telnet

3 if use remotely the web initerface of you box change the port don't use the standard ports 80 and 8080

Thanks for the advise... It's tricky if Dreambox can be changed from all over the world ;-)

-If the router doesn't have 21 & 23 configured to forward, then their is no security issue from wan right? I mean here it's necessary to use those ports on my own lan.(connection from computer <-> Dreambox both on lan)

Rubbish. This can only be done if the wrong ports are forwarded/opened on your router and you use the default password or when your Dreambox is having an external (internet) ip.
So there must be some issues met, before a Dreambox can be hacked or changed.

Routers normally do not have port 22 and 23 opened for incoming traffic. However modern modem-routers do have often port 80 and 21 opened for local traffic to the modem itself. Sometimes reachable from the outside word. Just take care in those cases you close these ports or forward them to real ftp servers on your LAN.
Never forward them to your Dreambox or only temporarily if you are being helped by a friend on the net.

I also advise, just to be sure.... at least take care your Dreambox password is changed.

Hello, Black Tiger is telling the truth. there must shurely some issues met before you can external acces your dreambox.
If you don't do any poortforwarding that are adressed to your dreambox except the normally tcp port for sharing the box is already difficult to acces from external connections.
Changing the password of your Dreambox is an easy step butt shurely wise to do, also changing the standard webinfo-username and webinfo-password on your config file is advised.

i did not no password for my dreambox 500s . i have try default password "dreambox" but it did not work
can you tell me hoe can i fix it ?
